Etape 1

Départ de la place du Général de Gaulle, à l’entrée de la cité médiévale. Passez sous la porte de la Benauge et descendez la rue sur 50 mètres en passant devant le Bureau d’Information Touristique de Saint-Macaire. En plus de l’information touristique traditionnelle, vous trouverez une cave à vins, des jus et autres objets souvenir.

Etape 2

Tournez à gauche sur Rue Carnot, en direction de la place du Mercadiou. Prenez le temps d'admirer cette place, bordée d’arcades à couverts, en pierres blondes, et de belles maisons des XIIIe et XVIe siècles. Descendez à nouveau la rue Carnot sur 200 mètres. Tournez légèrement à gauche puis passez sous la porte en pierre. Sur votre droite, vous pouvez observer la Maison de Tardes, maison forte médiévale comportant jusqu’à cinq niveaux, repérable par une archère du côté de la ville.

Etape 3

Go down 130 metres towards the banks of the Garonne along the tree-lined path and turn left as far as the old port of Saint-Macaire. Follow the stone path down to the banks of the Garonne

From the port, return to the loop and, at the fisherman's hut, continue straight on to the Garonne river.
fisherman's hut, continue straight ahead on the dirt track. Walk 850 metres along the Garonne, passing horses in a meadow and a magnificent poplar grove. At the fork in the road, turn left to return to the medieval town. Continue straight on towards the Saint-Macaire caves, where stone has been quarried since the Middle Ages, and the Barette fountain and washhouse, built in the 19th century. Walk along the ramparts to the park.

Etape 4

Vous passez au pied du Prieuré Saint-Sauveur, église priorale, Monument Historique du XIIe siècle.

Etape 5

Sur environ 2 kilomètres, vous longez les bords de Garonne et pouvez observer la ville de Langon sur l’autre rive. Une imposante grue en bordure de la Garonne rappelle au promeneur qu’à Langon, les composants de l’Airbus A 380 transportés par barges depuis Pauillac, sont déchargés depuis un ascenseur à bateaux et stockés. Ailes, éléments de fuselage, empennages sont acheminés ensuite par la route vers la chaîne d’assemblage finale située près de Toulouse.

Etape 6

Une fois arrivé au pont surplombant la Garonne, revenez sur vos pas jusqu’au Prieuré.

This 2-hour walk along the banks of the Garonne will take you to the ancient town of Saint-Macaire, nestling on its rocky outcrop. The church of Saint-Sauveur with its 14th-century murals, the old ramparts, the priory of Saint-Sauveur, the town gates and the medieval stronghold of Tardes all take you back to the Middle Ages, to this former lock on the Garonne. You’ll enjoy strolling with your nose to the sky through picturesque alleyways, wandering from small shops to nooks and crannies steeped in history, falling back into childhood as you climb steep little staircases, and marvelling at the view from the Place du Mercadiou, a symbol of the power of the old merchants.
