Saint-Laurent church in Illats to Illats
The most remarkable monument in the commune is Saint-Laurent church. It comprises a semi-circular apse preceded by a straight bay, which can be dated back to the 11th century. The beautiful five-arched western portal is listed as a Historic Monument. The decoration on the capital of the fourth pillar on the right features two seated quadrupeds leaning against each other, their mouths turned towards a human mask in place of the corner volute, with palmettes for wings. The remodelled single nave is preceded by the beginning of a false transept. The choir’s triumphal arch was doubled in width in the 12th century by two columns with sculpted capitals.
