Eglise de Saint-Pardon-de-Conques to Saint-pardon-de-conques

Built entirely of stone, the church of Saint-Pardon-de-Conques is dedicated to the archangel Raphael. Built on a rocky spur on the crest of the Garonne, it served as a landmark for boatmen. It was probably built towards the end of the 11th century as a resting place for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. The village of Saint Pierre d’Aurillac, on the other bank of the river, was one of the main stopping-off points before the perilous crossing of the Landes. This church is characterised by the inclination of its choir in relation to the nave, which represents the inclination of Christ’s head at the moment of his death.
